The Montgomery General Hospital Health Foundation is hoping to raise $7.5 million to help fund the hospital's $30 million expansion project.
Construction began last month on the project, which is expected to take 25 months to complete, hospital officials reported. Officials broke ground on the project Feb. 1, the same day it celebrated is acquisition by MedStar Health of Columbia.
The project features a new three-story West Patient Tower, which includes an expanded Howard R. Gudelsky Emergency Department capable of treating 60,000 patients a year, and an East Tower enhancement that will provide private patient rooms.
"The capital campaign is crucial to the development and growth of Montgomery General Hospital in this community," hospital President Peter Monge said in a prepared statement. "The campaign will fund new construction and major renovations to provide community residents with increased access to the services they need."
The campaign began with commitments from the MGH Women's Board, hospital and foundation board members, and hospital employees, physicians and administrators. It was then expanded to the business community, as well as state and local governments.
As of Sept. 1, approximately $5.4 million has been raised in gifts and pledges, hospital officials reported.
The 149-bed nonprofit community hospital was founded in 1918.
