Downcounty Consortium meetings on school choice and academies

Downcounty Consortium parents and their eighth-grade children are invited to evening meetings to learn about the choice processes and the academies at five consortium high schools. Presentations will also be available in Chinese, French, Korean, Spanish and Vietnamese. The presentations will begin at 7 p.m. The locations and dates are:

Yeshiva students earnAP Scholar designation
Ten students at the Yeshiva of Greater Washington have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Exams.
William Szanzer and Judith Truxton qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.
Chava Baars, Joseph Berliant and Batya Singer qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average of 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four of these exams.
Daniel Cohen, Abby Gershuwitz, Benjamin Goodman, Hadassah Keleman and Eliana Kurlantzick qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher.
Einstein musician honored
Adam Neely, a senior in the International Baccalaureate Program of Albert Einstein High School, was a winner in the Maryland Distinguished Scholar Talent-in-the-Arts Competition, placing first in the jazz instrumental category. Neely plays upright and electric bass in the Einstein Jazz Ensemble. He will appear as the opening act of the ‘‘Band Together” Hurricane Benefit 3:45 p.m. Saturday at the Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Kensington.
Vendors needed for Kemp Mill ES flea market
The Kemp Mill Elementary School PTA is seeking vendors for its annual fall festival and flea market. The event will be held 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 9 at the school, 411 Sisson St., Silver Spring. Einstein hosts college fair
Albert Einstein High School hosts its seventh annual college fair 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 10 at the school, 11135 Newport Mill Road, Kensington. Students can browse through the school’s main hall and speak one-on-one with representatives from more than 90 colleges and universities from across the country. Call 301-929-2200.
Middle schools hold Katrina benefit basketball game
Faculty members from Silver Spring International and Eastern middle schools performed in a benefit basketball game on Friday, with the proceeds going to victims of Hurricane Katrina, according to the Web site at Silver Spring International.

Participants will have an opportunity to comment on the school system’s strategic plan, including areas that are working well and those that need improvement.

Volunteers sought for schools
Orientations have been scheduled in September and October for volunteers age 50 and older who are interested in working with students in Montgomery County Public Schools.
