BroadSoft names Bukovsky as VP

While attending Virginia Tech, David Bukovsky became intrigued with the telecommunications industry when he heard about deregulation efforts. His interest led to almost 20 years in the industry and a recent appointment as vice president of products for BroadSoft, a Gaithersburg provider of voice over Internet protocol — or Internet telephone — software.
One of the biggest changes he’s seen in the field is the development of Internet protocol technology that has allowed companies that previously focused mainly on Internet or cable products to offer telephone and other services, said Bukovsky, 40.
‘‘It’s a very exciting development that is changing the telecommunications industry,” he said. ‘‘One of the services companies can offer is technology where you can see the number of who is calling you on the phone come across your television screen, so you know who is calling before you get off your couch.”
Bukovsky brings invaluable knowledge and relationships in the VoIP product management arena, said Michael Tessler, president and CEO of BroadSoft.
‘‘As BroadSoft’s market impact continues to grow, David’s experience and leadership make him an exceptional choice for scaling our products unit, which is at the forefront of the industry,” Tessler said in a statement. ‘‘As one of the pioneers of [VoIP] call and session control technologies, David understands how our products fit into the business goals for telecom and cable service providers.”
Bukovsky grew up in Northern Virginia. While earning a bachelor’s in industrial engineering and operational research at Virginia Tech, he worked for IBM as an engineer through a cooperative education program.
‘‘It was a paying position in which I got actual work experience,” Bukovsky said. ‘‘It’s a great program that helped me get my foot in the door.”
His first job out of college was with Bell Atlantic, now part of Verizon Communications. He worked there for nine years in various management positions in engineering, operations, technology planning, marketing and program management at offices in Greenbelt and Baltimore, among others.
Bukovsky then went to Cisco Systems, working in area offices, with the latest in Herndon, Va. His work there included software for Internet telephony providers in positions such as director of product marketing in the broadband subscriber applications division.
He met numerous BroadSoft leaders and kept in touch with them over the years. ‘‘I have always been impressed with their rock-solid technology and the high caliber of their people and management,” Bukovsky said.
BroadSoft, which formed in 1998, provides Internet telephony applications to many of the largest carriers worldwide, including BellSouth, Sprint and Verizon.
Bukovsky lives in Centerville, Va., with his wife, Robyn, and four children ranging in age from 10 months to 10 years. Besides attending his children’s Little League baseball and soccer games, he likes to garden and cook out.
‘‘Between family and career, that takes up most of my time. I have a little time left over for sleep,” Bukovsky said.
