Wang makes second attempt at City Council seat

After working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for almost 20 years, Eric Kuohwa Wang said he hopes to deliver a brighter future by securing a seat on the Rockville City Council.

The 49-year-old resident of Rockville’s Silver Rock neighborhood made an unsuccessful run for a seat on the council in 1999, but said he has learned from the experience and is ready to move forward. He was one of the last council hopefuls to file his candidacy with the city this time.

‘‘It was a good experience the first time,” Wang, who has lived in Rockville since 1991, said. ‘‘ I learned the system, I met the people and I learned the issues that were important.”

As a letter carrier, he said he has seen each house in Rockville and knows its residents. He said he has also gained knowledge about a variety of issues while serving as an at-large representative on the Rockville Human Services Advisory Commission, which provides advice and guidance to the mayor and City Council on human service needs in Rockville and how best to address them.

Wang, a native of Taiwan who immigrated to the United States in 1981, said one of the main reasons he is running for a seat on the council is because he wants to give back to the community. That includes reaching out to Rockville’s minority population, he said.

‘‘I want to help the minority people who have low incomes and are behind in school,” Wang said. ‘‘I want to be a resource to them and help them become strong and independent. If I can do it, you can do it, too, and I can help you.”

Wang, who took evening classes to earn his master’s degree in commercial real estate from the University of Maryland University College in 1998 and received his broker’s license in 2003, said education is one of his many campaign issues because he feels it is the key to success.

He said he is also very concerned about the state of senior care and would like to provide more low-income housing to elder residents.

‘‘Seniors should be the No. 1 priority,” he said, adding that he and his family spend time volunteering at senior centers. ‘‘They are the treasures of our society. I respect them and appreciate their hard work for us.”

Community outreach seems to be a theme in Wang’s campaign and he spoke animatedly about helping minority residents feel more at home in Rockville and how he thinks it is important to reach out to young people who might feel tempted to join gangs.

‘‘I want to share all of the things that I have learned,” he said. ‘‘I shall devote my time to the Rockville community.”

Wang lives with his wife Frances, a computer programmer, and daughter Erica, a sophomore at Rockville High School.
