Wheaton
|
The man who provided the community's current name was Maj. Gen. Frank Wheaton, who was commanding officer of the Army of Potomac and led the defense of Fort Stevens during the Civil War.
From 1890 to 1910, while the population in the rest of Montgomery County declined or grew only slightly, Wheaton doubled in size. When Gov. Theodore R. McKeldin opened the "new" Georgia Avenue on Nov. 1, 1952, Wheaton expanded.
With the construction of Wheaton Plaza in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Wheaton further enhanced its influence as a regional center of major importance in Montgomery County.
