Poolesville first began to take shape when two brothers from Anne Arundel County, John Poole Sr. and Joseph Poole Sr., purchased 160 acres in the area in 1760.
In 1793, John Poole Jr. built a two-room, log store on 15 acres given to him by his father and sold parcels to other merchants, including a tailor, tanner and tavern owner — and Poolesville was born. The town was incorporated in 1867.
The residents — about 5,160 — share an appreciation for the town and its simple way of life, yet differ about its future growth potential.
