Aspen Hill
|
The name Aspen Hill is said to have come from the aspen trees located near the area's first post office, which opened around 1864 in a general store on what was then the Washington-Brookeville Pike (now the intersection of Connecticut and Georgia avenues).
The 13-square-mile area is roughly bordered on the north by Derwood, the northeast by Olney, the south by Wheaton, the west by the city of Rockville and the east by Layhill. The area includes Leisure World, a massive complex of senior housing.
The planning area has a population of approximately 62,865 out of a total county population of more than 900,000, according to the 2005 Census Update Survey of Montgomery County Park and Planning. The area has approximately 25,100 households of all types, from single-family homes to apartments. The median household income is $59.925, according to Park and Planning 2004 statistics.
The commercial hub of Aspen Hill revolves around the intersections of Georgia and Connecticut avenues and Aspen Hill Road, where its major shopping centers are located. There is also a popular shopping center on Bauer Drive and another at Leisure World on Georgia Avenue.
