Planning board denies Chillum natural gas facility

Friday, Sept. 23, 2005

The county planning board denied Washington Gas’ permit request to open a liquefied natural gas facility in Chillum on Thursday.

Washington Gas requested a special exception permit to convert the Chillum Natural Gas Facility at 2130 Chillum Road to accommodate liquefied natural gas. That facility was in operation from 1933 to 1999 when two natural storage tanks were demolished.

Washington Gas proposed to renovate the facility and create a liquefied natural gas processing plant and storage tanks.

Stuart Eisenberg, co-chair of the Washington Gas Watch Alliance and a former Hyattsville city councilman, said Washington Gas’ application is not consistent with the general plan or the pending transit-oriented district development plan for the West Hyattsville Metro Station.
