I don't think that the opposition by the Town of Chevy Chase is the only opposition to the Purple Line.
Many citizens are opposed to the Purple Line proposal because of the construction costs of the Light Rail project. Many citizens are opposed because the proposed route will dramatically change the character and experience of the Capital Crescent Trail users. Many citizens are opposed to the Purple Line because there are many other good transportation projects, like the Interstate 270 corridor rapid bus transit project, which is cheaper and would actually take more cars off our congested roads. Many citizens are opposed to the Purple Line because this project, once built, will take critical Maryland and county mass transit subsidy dollars away from Metro, which is crumbling from the lack of adequate dedicated funding.
I wonder how many Maryland citizens know that the Purple Line has no relationship to the Washington Metro transit system? There are many good reasons to oppose the current "endorsed" Purple Line light rail project. I'm just glad that the Town of Chevy Chase has the financial resources to oppose it with some legal muscle.
