Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005
A Westminster man was arrested Thursday in an attempted homicide and shooting of an Eldersburg area man.
The shooting took place outside Eldersburg’s E. A. Poe’s restaurant at approximately 12:50 a.m. Thursday, when Steven Lewis, 28 of Westminster, allegedly confronted the victim, Harold Coleman, 36 of Sykesville, in the parking lot. Lewis allegedly fired three to five shots at Coleman, who was not injured from the gun fire. Coleman sustained minor injuries after fleeing on foot through a wooded area.
Maryland State Troopers, Carroll County Sheriff Deputies, and two Baltimore County Police canines searched the area for Lewis, who fled on foot, but were unable to locate him. Troopers recovered physical evidence at the scene, including a handgun.
Witnesses described a gray Volkswagen GTI as a possible get away vehicle. Based on a broadcast, at approximately 2 a.m., the Westminster City Police stopped a Volkswagen GTI, near Lewis’ residence. The vehicle occupants were interviewed at the Westminster police barracks and released without charges.
Lewis was located at his residence and arrested without incident. A search warrant on his residence yielded additional evidence.
Lewis was charged with attempted second degree murder, first degree assault, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, possession of a handgun, and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony. He was released into the care and custody of the Carroll County Central Booking facility pending his appearance before the District Court Commission for Carroll County.
