It’s official: Wang, Dorsey are council candidates

Another candidate has joined the race for four available Rockville City Council seats.

Eric Kuohwa Wang, a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, is in.

Wang ran unsuccessfully for a council seat in 1999. He serves on the city’s Human Services Advisory Commission.

That makes nine council candidates, including Councilman Robert E. Dorsey, who, like Wang, recently submitted the necessary paperwork to hold a spot on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Others who have said they might join the crowded council race are Robert Campbell, a stay-at-home dad from Hungerford; Judy Miller, vice president of the Twinbrook Citizens Association; and Tracy Pakulniewicz-Chidiac, a public relations consultant.

The mayoral candidates running to replace outgoing Mayor Larry Giammo include Councilwoman Susan R. Hoffmann, Mark M. Pierzchala and Drew Powell.

The sign-up deadline is Friday at the close of business.

Politics and pizza, again

A local mom-and-pop pizza parlor is quickly becoming the place to stump for votes in the Rockville city election.

Councilwoman Anne M. Robbins is hosting a re-election kickoff at Giuseppi’s Pizza Plus on Saturday. Mayoral candidate Mark M. Pierzchala also plans to ply the people with pizza at his campaign kickoff on Sept. 11.

Mayoral candidate Susan M. Hoffmann and council candidate Piotr Gajewski have also hosted events at the eatery. Mayor Larry Giammo used Giuseppi’s for the same purpose in the past.

Why the popularity among politicians?

‘‘I think it’s just because we’re Rockville,” Giuseppi’s owner Sue Feldman said. ‘‘We’ve been here for a long time and it’s nice that people feel that way. We’re a family-owned establishment, not a chain.”

Feldman said her business gives no endorsements. The restaurant has contributed in-kind donations to campaigns in the past.

Robbins is running for her fifth council term. Her husband also served on the City Council. Her event is Saturday from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Pierzchala, president of College Gardens Civic Association, is making his first bid for mayor. His event is scheduled for Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The pizza shop is located along East Montgomery Avenue near the Regal Cinemas.

Voter registrationset for Saturday

The Rockville Human Rights Commission will hold a voter registration drive at two Rockville locations Saturday.

Registration tables will be set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Safeway grocery stores at 1902 Veirs Mill Road and 403 Redland Blvd.
