Reviewing rules of the road in back-to-school season
For the 2008 back-to-school season, the Maryland State Highway Administration and Choose Safety for Life campaign partners encourage people to review the rules of the road for driving, walking or biking.
The Choose Safety of Life campaign outlines how to be safe in their B-SAFE campaign: Buckle up, Slow down – speeding kills, Always drive sober, Focus and Everyone share the road.
The campaign partners also remind drivers to pay attention to school zones during morning arrival and in afternoon dismissal.
The SHA reminds motorists that it is against the law to pass a stopped school bus when its lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended; on undivided roadways without a physical barrier or median, vehicles must stop on both sides of the road. Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to load or unload children; motorists should slow down and prepare to stop their vehicles. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms mean the bus is stopped and that children are getting on or off; motorists approaching in either direction must wait until the red lights stop flashing before proceeding.
