The City of Mount Rainier is continuing its Free Flick program of family-friendly movies through October.
The movies are shown outdoors on a large screen. Popcorn is free.
Movies begin at 8 p.m. at the intersection of 33rd and Perry streets.
"North by Northwest" will be shown Sept. 11, "Spiderman" on Sept. 25," and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" on Oct. 9.
Electronic recycling
in Mount Rainier
The City of Mount Rainier is hosting an electronic recycling program for residents from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 19.
Recyclable electronics include: keyboards, laptop computers, fax machines, telephone systems, printers, computer speakers, copiers, scanners, surge protectors, pagers, cell phones, circuit boards, CD players, radios, stereos, VCRs, televisions, ink jet and toner cartridges and any individual computer component parts. Unacceptable items include software, stereo speakers, boxes and home appliances such as toasters and microwave ovens.
Residents must show proof of residency and each household is limited to recycling six items. Residents can drop off the electronics at the Department of Public Works, at 3715 Wells Ave.
Basic training graduate
has Brentwood ties
The daughter of Brentwood resident Donna Thurston recently graduated from Air Force basic training. Patricia N. Thurston graduated from the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. She spent eight weeks training in military discipline, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.
Thurston, a Charles Herbert Flowers High School graduate, also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Elected officials holding seminars for senior citizens
Beginning in September, Prince George's County Councilman Will Campos (D-Dist. 2) of Hyattsville and delegates Justin Ross (D-Dist. 22) of Greenbelt and Victor Ramirez (D-Dist. 47) of Cheverly will host a series of seminars for senior citizens.
The seminars will be conducted at the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center at 6120 Sargent Road.
A financial awareness seminar is slated for 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday.
Speakers from the Maryland Attorney General's Office, Maryland Comptroller's Office and county police department will discuss reverse mortgages, lending scams and property tax credit programs.
A healthy living seminar is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15.
Speakers from the county's health department, Department of Family Services and Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission will discuss healthy nutrition, physical fitness, emotional health and substance abuse.

Auditions held for
Prince George's Philharmonic
The Prince George's Philharmonic is hosting auditions for the 2009-2010 season from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Auditions will be held for two rotating horn positions, timpani, all string sections and wind, brass and percussion substitutes. All of the positions are for volunteers.
The auditions will be held at Northwestern High School, at 7000 Adelphi Road, in Hyattsville. Musicians also can audition online by visiting www.pgphilharmonic.org.

Hyattsville couple collecting donations for wounded veterans
A Hyattsville couple, Milton and Linda McGehee, and area churches are collecting donations for a special Christmas delivery to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
The gift baskets will be taken to the wards for amputees, physical therapy and registration, where they will be distributed to children who are visiting relatives being treated at the hospital.
Residents can drop off donations of shaving cream, razors, disposable cameras, toothbrushes, deodorant and other items at the First Baptist Church of Hyattsville, 5701 42nd Ave.; the Trinity Baptist Church, 1900 Beechwood Road; or First United Methodist Church, 6201 Belcrest Road.

College slates workshops
on financial aid, budgeting
Prince George's Community College will conduct a federal student aid workshop, " Financial Aid Basics: Facts and Myths about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid," from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 in room 133, Bladen Hall, at 301 Largo Road in Largo.
In addition, a forum entitled, "Money Management: How to Keep Your Cash" will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 in conference room two of the college's Largo Student Center.
The forum is meant to help people improve personal budgeting skills. Staff members from the Educational Systems Federal Credit Union will address financial planning and decision making skills at the forum.

Children's advocates
needed by CASA
The Prince George's Court Appointed Special Advocate organization is recruiting volunteers to advocate for the needs of abused and neglected children living in foster care. CASA provides training and supervision to volunteers who spend about 10 hours per month getting to know a child and what is in that child's best interest. Volunteers submit reports to help the courts better understand each individual child and collaborate with family members, teachers, social workers and others to ensure that the child's needs are met.

County Planning Board
wants residents' budget input
The Prince George's County Planning Board will host public forums regarding next year's parks, planning and recreation budget on Tuesday and Sept. 14.
The board is soliciting comments from county residents on the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission's budget for next fiscal year, which begins July 1.
Both forums will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday's forum will be held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex at 8001 Sheriff Road in Landover. The Sept. 14 forum will be held at the Harmony Hall Regional Center at 10701 Livingston Road in Fort Washington.
