Officer Jason Cokinos on April 29 was doing what most of us do on our roads during our daily commutes and that is exceeding the posted speed limits ("Report: Officer was speeding when he hit boy," Aug. 27 article).
There is no excuse, especially for someone like Officer Cokinos, to exceed the speed limit. He was traveling double the speed limit in a 30 mph zone when he struck 12-year-old Luis Jovel in the intersection of Stringtown Road and Needle Drive. Regardless of the fact that Officer Cokinos thought the speed limit was higher than posted, ignorance is no excuse of the law.
The injuries received by Jovel seem to in no way to be caused by malicious or intentional actions by Officer Cokinos. Cokinos made a mistake that he will most likely live with and regret for the rest of his life. But this story doesn't have to have the typical ending that most like it do.
Maybe if Officer Cokinos can reach out to the boy's parents and have an open dialogue with the family and the boy, the outcome of this tragic situation may end in a much more positive light that would be best for Jovel. Cokinos is accused of driving over the speed limit and unfortunately colliding with Jovel. This is a terrible accident and Jovel may come out of it with irreversible physical damage.
Instead of going through the courts and having all parties involved suing one another, it may be in everyone's best interest, (especially Jovels) for Officer Cokinos to console the family and spend some time with young Jovel. Something positive can come out of this for all parties concerned.
Something tells me that Cokinos isn't the bad guy that he is portrayed to be in the media, and he may be very capable of having a positive influence over the future life of the young Jovel.
