Carter's agenda backfired

In referring to President Jimmy Carter's wisdom in stressing the threat of the dependence on foreign oil to our future economic growth, Chuck Lyons ignores for the most part the naive solutions advanced by the former president when he was in office ("America's day of reckoning," Aug. 27 column).
His agenda included a sharp reduction in oil consumption by conservation at a time when our economy was dependent on it and, because of misplaced safety concerns, a complete halt to nuclear power development.
Further oil exploration and drilling in our territorial waters was discouraged and alternate energy sources research was essentially abandoned.
We are now experiencing the economic problems resulting from his agenda, as oil imports have increased, nuclear power usage remained stagnant, in comparison to European countries and China, and we have not yet developed alternate energy supplies.
