Bowie High School graduate Adrienne J. Jordan was the first Prince George's County resident to be awarded a continuing education scholarship from the Maryland chapter of the National Hampton Alumni Association, Inc.
Jordan, a 2005 graduate of Bowie High School, is a biology major at Hampton after transferring from Xavier University in New Orleans. She was awarded a scholarship for $1,500. This is the fifth consecutive year that the chapter has offered scholarships to support continuing students that attend Hampton University in Hampton, Va.

Pan African Festival
The Greater Mt. Nebo A.M.E. Church will host a Pan African Festival 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at 1001 Old Mitchellville Road. Activities at the festival will include performances by African drummers and dancers, storytelling, poetry readings, free health screenings, cultural and trade exhibitions, and food, clothing, art and jewelry vendors. Belair Mansion hosts 1860s game day
For the child that spends too much time in front of the TV or computer comes chance to rest their eyes and enjoy games that don't involve watching a screen. The Atlantic Guard Soldiers Aid Society will be at Belair Mansion from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday to demonstrate games from the 1860s. Visitors will be able to compete in board games, guessing games, and outdoor games such as graces and hoop rolling that were popular during the time of the Civil War.

Enabling seniors to swap gaming roles with computer savvy youth, the Bowie Senior Center is now offering Wii game nights from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays in September. Senior center class registration opens Tuesday
Registration for the Bowie Senior Center and Prince George's County Community College sponsored program Seasoned Adults Growing Educationally opens Tuesday. More than 70 classes are available in the fall semester, which begins Oct. 6 at the Senior Center. Adults ages 60 and over can register for the 14-week semester of classes at the center from 10 a.m. to noon for $50.

Yard sale to benefit
C. Elizabeth Reig School
The Bowie Rotary Club will host a community yard sale to benefit the playground project at C. Elizabeth Reig School in Bowie. The yard sale will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Bowie High School parking lot. Vendor space fees are $15 for Bowie residents and $25 for non-Bowie residents. Space will be assigned on a first-come first-serve basis and vendors must provide their own tables and chairs. To reserve a space, call Joy Thorpe at 301-262-3000.

grants for the arts
The city is now accepting applications for grants to sponsor community art projects. Grants up to a total of $4,000 will be awarded projects such as public performances or resident involvement in activities including workshops, community projects, community band or choir, group lessons in an art form or interactive arts experiences. Activities could include drama, voice, musical instruments, painting, drawing, murals, or pantomime, etc. Funding from the Grants from the Arts program, sponsored by the City Arts Committee, can be used to cover items like production costs, materials, advertising, publicity, rentals and supplies for classes, events or workshops.

New senior center advisory board members appointed
Two new members were appointed to the Bowie Senior Center's Advisory Board in July.
Tony Young succeeded Watson Edgins, who had completed his second term on the advisory panel. Estelle Anderson succeeded Margaret Hinton who had completed her second term on the advisory panel. Holdover members include Glory B. Williams, Frank Evans, Robert Fierstein, Barbara Harris, Luther Holley, Naomi Kirkpatrick and Carter Rardon.
