School supplies needed

The Linkages to Learning program is seeking donations of new school supplies to help children and their families prepare for the start of the school year.

New backpacks, composition books, crayons, folders, paper, pencils, pens, spiral notebooks and zippered notebook binders are especially needed.

Linkages to Learning is a school-based partnership between the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Montgomery County Public Schools, public and nonprofit agencies, communities and families. The program provides accessible health, mental health, social services and educational support services to help families and their children to succeed at home, school and in the community.

For many parents at the 28 elementary and middle schools served by Linkages to Learning — located around the county in Gaithersburg, Germantown, Rockville, Silver Spring, Takoma Park and Wheaton — the cost of school supplies is beyond their budgets.

Anyone interested in helping should call Sharon Strauss at 240-777-1449 or send an e-mail to Sharon.strauss@montgomerycountymd.gov.

One last call

Because the reviews keep coming in, Youth Press is extending its deadline until Aug. 31 for short essays⁄book reviews on the final Harry Potter book, ‘‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which was released July 21.

The reviews will be published in an upcoming edition of Youth Press.

Please include your name, age, community you live in, school and grade. Also, tell us how big a fan of Harry Potter you are, if you have read all of the books and seen the movies.
