Muriel (Goodman) Engel, 81, of Silver Spring, a former medical records librarian, died Aug. 10, 2007, of sepsis at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda.

Born Feb. 13, 1926 in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Rose Bachrack Goodman.

She was the former wife of Arnold Engel of Rockville.

Ms. Engel began her career in 1949 working at a Spanish-English bilingual radio and television school. She then spent six years at New York’s Sidney Hillman Health Center as chief medical records librarian and assistant records librarian. She and her former husband moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 1964.

She returned to the workforce as a medical records secretary at Doctor’s Hospital and Providence Hospital, both in Washington, D.C. She worked as a medical clerk-typist and procurement clerk-typist at NIH, then as a secretary in the gastrointestinal clinic at the Naval Hospital, Bethesda.

She was employed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. for 12 years before retiring in 1996.

Survivors include a son, Edward Engel of Prince Frederick; two daughters, Leigh Buchanan of Sudbury, Mass. and Harriet Engel of Frankfort, Ky.; and two grandchildren.

A service was held Aug. 18 at Borgwardt Funeral Home, Beltsville.
