Hundreds of Verizon customers in Burtonsville were without phone service Tuesday after a phone line was ‘‘severely damaged,” a Montgomery County spokeswoman said.

The Verizon line was damaged 9 a.m. Tuesday, interrupting landline service along Route 198 between Route 29 and Interstate 95, said Esther Bowring of Montgomery County Government.

The estimated 500 affected customers were expected to have phone service restored by Wednesday morning, Bowring said.

Verizon said it would distribute a limited number of cell phones for emergency use until service is restored. The phones were available at a trailer parked in Zimmerman’s Ace Hardware parking lot in Burtonsville.
