Riverdale Boy Scout honored
Chase Uber, a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 740 in College Park, has been promoted to Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the organization.
Uber, 18, of Riverdale earned the honor by completing an Eagle Scout leadership service project in conjunction with Meals on Wheels of College Park. The project is the culmination of each Eagle Scout candidate's training.
He prepared 120 emergency food packets for Meals on Wheels recipients, most of whom are elderly or disabled. The food was given to 60 recipients, each of whom received two packets.
The packets — which consisted of long-lasting and non-perishable items — are meant to be eaten in weather emergencies when Meals on Wheels is unable to deliver meals.
Uber funded the project by raising $1,600 from local organizations and donors. The food and supplies cost about $600, and he donated the remaining $1000 to Meals on Wheels.
Uber graduated this spring from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville. This fall he will enroll at Salisbury University, where he will major in elementary education. He plans to become a teacher.
His parents are Timothy and Michelle Uber of Riverdale.

UM receives nearly $2 million for brain imaging lab
The federal government's National Science Foundation has awarded the University of Maryland, College Park, $1.94 million for the construction of a brain imaging laboratory.
The university's College of Behavioral and Social Sciences will develop the brain imaging center, which will include a 14-ton, 10-foot-long functional magnetic resonance, or fMRI, scanner. As opposed to a traditional MRI which examines the body's internal structure, a fMRI measures oxygenated blood flow during brain activity.
Researchers hope to use the scanner and other equipment to research and understand brain activity in children during learning and social interaction. The center could be completed in as soon as one year.
