The music, food and culture of Ethiopia will be showcased 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Long Branch Library, 8800 Garland Ave., Silver Spring. The event in the first program in a seven-part series called "Long Branch Library Celebrates its Many World Cultures."
Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, the free programs are designed to facilitate understanding of the many cultures represented by ethnic groups of people who live in the community and use the Long Branch Library, librarian Sue Unger said.
Other programs in the series will feature the South American music group Cantare on Oct. 4 and the American Indian storyteller Joseph Stands With Many on Nov. 8.

Siena School student chosen to perform at U.S. Open
Washington, D.C., resident Elijah Lawrence, a seventh-grader at The Siena School in Silver Spring, is among 20 vocalists age 12 and younger chosen to perform patriotic-themed songs at the 2008 U.S. Open tennis championships, held Aug. 25 through Sept. 7 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y. Each of the 20 children will perform in front of anticipated sellout crowds. The performers were selected at the second-annual open casting call held at Radio City Music Hall. Performances were conducted in front of a panel of three celebrity judges - former Top 10 "American Idol" contestant Constantine Maroulis, Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy and former MTV "Total Request Live" host Susie Castillo. Lawrence is the only performer from the Washington, D.C., area selected and one of four chosen from outside the metropolitan New York area.
Family carnival
The annual St. Camillus family carnival will be held 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept 5, noon to 11 p.m. Sept. 6 and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 7 at St. Camillus Church, 1600 St. Camillus Drive in Silver Spring. There will be food, games and rides. Admission is free, but a small fee will be charged for rides. From noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 6, patrons can have unlimited access to any ride for $10. A free workshop titled "College Admissions 101" will be offered 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Silver Spring Library, 8901 Colesville Road. A representative from Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions will explain the college admissions process.

Tour Silver Spring history
A walking tour of Silver Spring's "original Main Street," Georgia Avenue, will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sept. 6. The tour will be led by Silver Spring Historical Society president Jerry A. McCoy and participants will meet at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station, 8100 Georgia Ave., near the intersection with Sligo Avenue. Cost is $5 per person. Children age 13 and younger and historical society members with membership card are admitted free. Reservations are not required. Open house at B&O Railroad station
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station will host a free open house 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6 at 8100 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. The station is the only building in downtown Silver Spring on the National Register of Historic Places. Parking is available in front of the station. Call 301-495-4915.
