Taxicab rides will continue to cost an extra $1.50 per trip through at least Nov. 25 in Montgomery County.
The county's transportation department extended the surcharge, added in May, to offset continued high fuel prices that make it difficult for drivers to afford their operating expenses.
The department will consider whether to renew the surcharge again in November.
Current taxicab meter rates were set in February 2006 and were based on the September 2005 cost of a gallon of regular gasoline pegged at $3.28.
AAA Mid-Atlantic reported Tuesday an average gas price of $3.62 a gallon for regular for the Maryland counties around Washington. The price was down from $3.997 a month ago, and up from $2.718 a year ago.
