Bowie mayor named to D-23 ticket

Thursday, Aug. 24, 2006

Bowie Mayor G. Frederick Robinson has been selected to join the District 23 slate, ticket leader and County Councilman Douglas J.J. Peters (D-Dist. 4) of Bowie announced Thursday.

Peters said Robinson was picked over candidates Ingrid Turner and Darrell Carrington because of his experience as an elected city official. The District 4 Councilman will represent two of the largest cities in the county. Turner and Carrington have never held political office.

‘‘You have to have a real understanding in how a city works so you can provide them resources,” said Peters, a former Bowie City Councilman. ‘‘That helped me when I ran for County Council. I knew how it could help him.”

‘‘They wanted someone who has the experience to start on day one,” Robinson said. ‘‘ ... Clearly, it’s important to send a message to voters that we have a common interest and a general goal to improve the district.”

Robinson will join County Councilmen Tom Dernoga (D-Dist. 1), David Harrington (D-Dist. 5) and Samuel Dean (D-Dist. 6) and District 3 candidate and College Park City Councilman Eric Olson on Peters’ ticket.

Also on the ticket are Del. James Hubbard (D) of Bowie and Mary Conroy (D) of Bowie.

Many political observers said the District 23 slate selection was an important one because of the popularity of Peters would be a boon in a District 4 campaign.
