Benefit concert raises money for Century teenA benefit concert will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 8 for Lindsey Wilson, a Century High School student who was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in early March. Lindsey has been undergoing chemo and now radiation treatments at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, according to an e-mail advertising the concert. ‘‘For Lindsey, A Night of Inspiration” will be held to help with medical expenses not covered by insurance. Tickets will be on sale at the Mustard Seed in Westminster, $5 students and $10 for adults. Stroke survivors study The Howard County Office on Aging and the VA Medical Center in Baltimore will be offering an exercise research study beginning in September for people who have trouble walking as a result of a stroke that occurred at least three months ago. There is no cost to participate, and participants will receive a free medical evaluation prior to the start of the study. The exercise class for this study will meet for one hour on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for six months. One exercise class will be held at Ellicott City Senior Center from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Another class will be held at Glenwood Senior Center from 1 to 2 p.m. A third exercise class will be held at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in downtown Baltimore. Gym exercises will include walking, practicing sitting and standing and improving balance. Participants also will be given exercises to do at home. Participants will be evaluated before beginning the exercise class, at the midpoint of the class and after six months of the class. The evaluation includes a timed walk and the completion of questionnaires with an interviewer. Individuals will also be asked to wear a light ankle monitor that counts the number of steps taken in a 48 hour period. For more information about participating in this study, call 410-455-1390. Cycling for asthma The 17Th annual Maryland Wine Festival Asthma Bike Tour will be held Sept. 15. Each year this event attracts riders from throughout Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia and beyond, according to an American Lung Association press release. The event will start and end at the Agricultural Center in Westminster. Riders can choose from the 8-, 31- or 62.5-mile (Metric Century) routes that wind through scenic Carroll County. Routes are supported with rest stops and are designed for cyclists of all experience levels. Preferred parking, commemorative T-shirt and nutritious snacks and refreshments included. The event supports the asthma education and research programs of the American Lung Association of Maryland. Double basket bingo The Freedom District Lions and Lioness will hold their second annual double basket bingo on Aug. 25. The event will be held at the Sykesville Freedom District Volunteer Fire Department hall on Md. Route 32 at Freedom Avenue. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. when attendees will be served a continental breakfast. The first session of bingo will begin at 10:30 a.m. Lunch and dessert will be served following the first 20 game bingo session. After lunch a second 20 game session of basket bingo will take place. The event will end by 5 p.m. There will be three King Tut games for baskets, raffles and jackpot games. Breakfast, lunch and 40 games of Basket Bingo are included with your $40 admission ticket.
