Filing deadline approaching for candidates

The deadline to become a candidate for city office is a little more than two weeks away.

Prospective candidates must submit to the city clerk a petition signed by at least 100 registered Rockville voters by 5 p.m. Sept. 7.

So far, eight residents have announced their candidacies for the City Council: Theodric Anderson, John Britton, Councilman Robert E. Dorsey, Piotr Gajewski, Carl Henn, Councilwoman Phyllis R. Marcuccio, Brigitta Mullican and Councilwoman Anne M. Robbins. Only Dorsey, who was undecided about whether to run for mayor or seek another council seat until recently, has yet to submit the required signatures.

All three mayoral candidates, Councilwoman Susan R. Hoffmann, Mark M. Pierzchala and Drew Powell, have submitted their election packets to the City Clerk’s Office.

Aside from those candidates, activity is light, with no calls seeking help to navigate the process, City Clerk Claire Funkhouser said recently.

Any last-minute candidates may want to submit their list before the deadline in case there are any questions on any of the signatures, city staff members said.

Catching air time

The application deadline to host election debates with airtime on The Rockville Channel (cable channel 11) is Sept. 4.

The city requires applicant organizations to be politically neutral.

Televised debates or forums must be held no later than Oct. 20 to ensure they will be replayed before the Nov. 6 election.

If more than three organizations meet the criteria outlined by city campaign policy, a drawing will be held to select three groups.

No organizations have signed up yet, but several have indicated they would apply, Deputy City Manager Catherine Tuck Parrish said.
