Orioles finish third in NABF World SeriesThe Brunswick Orioles picked up their third top-three finish in five years at the National Amateur Baseball Federation's Major Division World Series, finishing third. Brunswick won the NABF World Series in 2004, and was third in 2006. John McDowell, the Orioles' catcher, had a particularly good series, hitting .529 and winning the Tournament batting title. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team. The Orioles went 3-1 in pool play, which started on Thursday at the Derby City Field in Louisville, Ky. They came out big with a 10-2 win over the Cincinnati Flames, piling on a three-run fourth inning and a six-run fifth. McDowell had a two-run homer and Wayne Toms had an RBI double, while Corey Green and Roger Dawson added RBI singles. Andrew Derr had an RBI triple and went 3-for-5. Travis Lee earned the win, allowing only one unearned run, four hits and two walks while striking out four. Brunswick (31-9) lost 5-3 to New Haven, Conn., despite taking the lead in the fifth. Green, McDowell, Jayson Mobley and Andy Maught all hit doubles in the game. With a second loss meaning elimination, the Orioles came to life to beat the Chicago Clout 3-2. Maught opened with an RBI double, then Dawson drove in the tying run in the third inning. Toms reached in the seventh on a fielder's choice, then made it to third on a wild pick-off throw. He scored off of an RBI hit from Gerrad Talkington to the left side of the field. Mobley was the only multi-hit batter for the Orioles, going 2-for-3. Willie McLane earned the win, throwing a complete game with seven strike outs and no walks. The Orioles then clinched the No. 1 seed by beating the Ohio Titans 4-0. McDowell and Mobley each hit doubles, while Green added a sacrifice fly. John Sechler threw the complete-game shutout, striking out five while scattering seven hits and two walks. Brunswick was then eliminated by eventual tournament champion Tampa Elite with an 8-4 loss on Sunday. In the semifinal, Brunswick racked up 11 hits and led the game twice in the early innings. For the Orioles, Green had a solo home run as part of a three-hit performance. McDowell, Seth Keyser, Toms and Maught all had multi-hit showings. Maught also added a double.
