The Bennigan's Grill and Tavern in Rockville, once a popular dining destination for the lunch and dinner crowd, abruptly closed for good July 29 after its parent company filed for bankruptcy.

S&A Restaurant Corp., a subsidiary of the Texas-based MetroMedia Restaurant Group, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation. All corporate locations, which include some Bennigan's locations and all Steak & Ale and Tavern locations, will be shuttered for good.

Franchisee-owned Bennigan's will not be affected by the filing. In a statement, the president of the Bennigan's Franchise Operator Association, Larry Briski, said, "They will be open today, tomorrow and months and years to come."

The Bennigan's restaurant in Rockville, at 12276 Rockville Pike, had a sign in the window days after its closing that read, "Closed for Business."

Only one Bennigan's restaurant is left in Maryland — the chain's Glen Burnie location on Ritchie Highway.
