Del. Nancy J. King of Montgomery Village was nominated Tuesday night by the county’s Democratic Central Committee to the District 39 Senate seat.

District 39 includes 110,000 residents of North Potomac, Darnestown, parts of Germantown, unincorporated Gaithersburg and Washington Grove.

King’s name will be forwarded to the governor, who has 15 days to appoint her to the seat vacated by Patrick J. Hogan (D) of Montgomery, who resigned Aug. 10 to work as the University System of Maryland’s top lobbyist.

King, a former county school board member, has been in the House of Delegates since 2003.

King won the nomination over Del. Saqib Ali and former delegate Gene W. Counihan. Del. Charles E. Barkley of Germantown withdrew his name before Tuesday’s vote.

The Central Committee now starts the nomination process for King’s successor in the House. Kirill Reznik of Germantown, president of the Montgomery County Young Democrats and a member of central committee, and Hugh Bailey of Montgomery Village, who ran unsuccessfully for an at-large seat on the County Council last year, have said they would consider applying for the seat.

The central committee is also in the process of nominating a successor to Del. Marilyn R. Goldwater (D-Dist. 16) of Bethesda, who announced her resignation last week. Goldwater’s successor will be nominated on Sept. 11.
