Riderwood raises $220K for Benevolent Care Fund

Riderwood, a retirement community in Silver Spring raised more than $220,000 for its to benefit the Benevolent Care Fund at its eighth-annual gala on July 26. The fund provides residents with the "peace of mind" that Riderwood will be their home for life even if they encounter unexpected financial hardship due to extended illness, according to a news release from Riderwood.

County sponsors capital cost symposium

Montgomery County will sponsor a free symposium on techniques in estimating and containing capital costs and planning for contingencies 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road, Silver Spring.

Attendees will join county government's senior leadership, capital project managers, engineers, architects, cost estimators and capital budget staff to learn about the capital cost estimating practices used by government agencies and the private sector.

The workshop is aimed at cost estimators, engineers, architects, capital budget analysts and coordinators, capital project managers and procurement specialists.

Experts from the General Services Administration, management consulting firms and the development community will identify best practices in cost estimating and:

ïDiscuss cost-estimating methodologies

ïIdentify causes of cost increases

ïPresent strategies to contain costs

ïAddress budgeting for "risk" and contingencies

ïOffer practical advice on minimizing time delays and containing costs

ïDescribe the capital project process, including cost estimation, timing of funding commitments, and facility planning and design.
