The first of two free cooking courses designed to teach residents how to combat cancer through proper diet and nutrition will be offered 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Lisner Building of Washington Adventist Hospital, 7600 Carroll Ave. in Takoma Park. The courses are being offered by The Cancer Project, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to advance cancer prevention through education and research.

‘‘There is a strong connection between what we eat and whether we get cancer or we can survive cancer,” said Jennifer Reilly, a registered dietician and senior nutritionist with The Cancer Project. ‘‘About 30 to 60 percent of cancer cases can be attributed to a poor diet.”

Local cooking instructor Brandi Redo will teach participants how to maintain a low-fat, vegetarian diet filled with cancer-fighting antioxidants and phytochemicals and cut down on fatty foods that Reilly said have been linked to cancer.

The second session will take place Sept. 19.
