Basketball star in making from Fairmont HeightsTerrell Johnson, sophomore at Fairmont Heights High School in Capitol Heights, won the 3-on-3 basketball championship and was named to the All-Star Team at the Keystone State Invitational Basketball Camp. Johnson, a small forward, attended the camp was held at Albright College in Reading, Pa. Cheverly resident finished school year on high note Julianna Henriette Horchler of Cheverly made the dean's list at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del. Horchler is a sophomore fashion merchandising major in the school's college of human services, education and public policy. Students who earn a 3.33 GPA or better during the semester are eligible for the dean's list. Residents become Hokie alumni Two central area residents graduated from Virginia Tech May 9 from the school's college of liberal arts and human sciences. George Blake of New Carrollton received a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies and Brendan Malone of Cheverly earned a bachelor's degree in communication. Students share experience of solar eclipse Doswell E. Brooks Elementary School in Capitol Heights held a solar eclipse family night July 31 and a live solar eclipse Web cast from China at 6 a.m. Aug. 1. Science, Mathematics, Aerospace, Research and Technology Inc. sponsored the program. Family Night sponsors included groups such as the Brooke Road-Rollins Avenue-Walker Mill Avenue Civic Association and Greenbelt's NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Flowers High student attends music program Mitchellville resident Anthony A. Stubbs Jr. spent two weeks this summer studying percussion and steel pan at Birch Creek Music Performance Center in Door County, Wis. He was among 38 young musicians selected from throughout the country to attend the Percussion and Steel Band session at the school. The school's mission is to provide intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians age 12 to 19 by immersing them in a professional, mentoring environment. During the program, students performed seven joint concerts with their teachers before paying concertgoers. Stubbs, a student at Charles H. Flowers High School, is the grandson of Ralph V. and Marlene T. Daniels. Resident completes Navy basic training Navy Seaman Apprentice Anthony L. Wright recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Wright completed classroom study, practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival and shipboard and aircraft safety. The capstone event is "Battle Stations," which gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in fleet. Wright is a 2006 graduate of Suitland High School and the son of Yolanda R. Johnson of Washington, D.C. and Anthony L. Wright of Bowie. Area students earn college degrees Students from Riverdale and Hyattsville were among 313 who graduated with bachelor's degrees this spring from the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore. Jennifer Green-Butler of Riverdale graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Aaron Credle, also of Riverdale, graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology. Larnetta Matthews of Hyattsville graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology. The university also awarded 52 master's degrees and seven doctoral degrees during its commencement ceremony. Langley Park holds annual health fair The Langley Park Boys and Girls Club is holding its annual health fair, where a number of free services will be offered. The fair will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 23, at 1515 Merrimac Drive in unincorporated Hyattsville. The free fair will feature blood pressure screening and information from Planned Parenthood and the Prince George's Hospital Center. Gospel rapper Travy Joe will offer a guest performance. DeMatha grad praised by Cheverly Town Council The town of Cheverly declared July 2008 as Eagle Scout Benjamin Misleh Month in honor of Misleh, a Boy Scout in Troop 257 who became an Eagle Scout May 13. Misleh's Eagle Scout project was recruiting his fellow troop members in rehabilitating bicycles and sending them overseas through the nonprofit Bikes for the World. Misleh is a 2008 graduate of Hyattsville's DeMatha Catholic High School. Special arts program now registering The Shalom School after-school for the arts program is now accepting registration for a pilot art program designed for kindergartners. The program is called Integrated Creative Experiential Education and will be held beginning on Aug.25 from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The limit for classes is 10 students, and parents have until August 23 to register their children. The cost for the class is $75 per week, plus a one-time registration fee of $25. Restaurant to open in Hyattsville Art District Tara Thai, a Thai restaurant, announced it will lease space in the EYA Arts District in Hyattsville. This will be the 10th Tara Thai restaurant in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Retail construction is slated to begin in the fall and retailers could be open by fall or winter of 2009. The restaurant is the fifth business to commit to leasing in the Arts District in Hyattsville, located on Route 1. The others include a flagship cafÈ, Busboys and Poets, as well as Weight Watchers, Woodmont Dry Cleaners and Hyatts Market. Riverdale church celebrates anniversary The Word of Faith Church, Inc. in Riverdale is celebrating its 12th anniversary. In April 1996, Pastor Larry Frazier Sr. began holding Bible classes in his basement. Eventually he found a building to occupy in Riverdale and reached out to community members as it was being refurbished. The first service g was held Aug. 4, 1996 in a temporary space. The first service in the building was held in September of 1996. The church expanded its space in 2004 and held a celebration service in 2005.
