Greenbelt art teacher awarded Fulbright scholarshipArt teacher Robert Snyder, a Greenbelt resident, has been awarded a Fulbright-Hays scholarship. Fulbright-Hays scholarships are administered by the U.S. Department of Education's International Education Programs Service. The award is given to distinguished U.S. educators to serve as informal cultural ambassadors. The goal of the scholarship is to strengthen area and foreign language expertise among current and prospective U.S. educators. Snyder will spend the summer studying pre-Hispanic and contemporary Mexican art in Mexico City, Taxco, and Oaxaca. Snyder has worked with the Prince George's County Public School System for 10 years. He currently serves as an art teacher with Robert Frost Elementary School and Lamont Elementary School in New Carrollton and Dodge Park Elementary School in Landover. Snyder has seen his Hispanic student population increase within the last few years. Snyder will be traveling with 11 other Maryland art teachers who will participate in group projects in research, training and curriculum development. Greenbelt Park named one of 100 best places to camp The National Park Service announced that the campground at Greenbelt Park has been selected by Reserve America as one of America's top 100 family friendly places to camp. The 174-acre campground is located in Greenbelt Park, which the National Park Service classifies as "a green oasis of forest in an urban setting." The National Park Service said visitors come nationwide to camp, bicycle, backpack, hike, and picnic at Greenbelt Park. A night of Middle Eastern dance at New Deal CafÈ The New Deal CafÈ will showcase its quarterly Middle Eastern dance series, Starlight Shimmy, 8 to 11 p.m. on Saturday. The event will be hosted by noted belly dancer Zareen and will feature rising stars of the Middle Eastern dance world. NASA welcomes public to view its facilities NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will open its doors to the public for the first time since 2004 for LaunchFest, to be held 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13. NASA will allow the public the opportunity to see what NASA Goddard does, meet the people, see the spacecrafts, take tours, partake in lots of interactive activities for adults and children, meet scientists and engineers, enjoy food from vendors, music, and more. Hair salon donates cuts Every time a haircut is purchased for a child 18 or younger at the Hair Cuttery, the company will give a free haircut to an underprivileged child as part of its Share a Haircut program through Aug. 15. Hair Cuttery, which has donated more than 380,000 such haircuts as part of the program since the inception, has locations at Laurel Lakes Centre on Baltimore Avenue and at Maryland City Plaza on Fort Meade Road. Special arts program now registering The Shalom School after-school for the arts program is now accepting registration for a pilot art program designed for kindergartners. The program is called Integrated Creative Experiential Education and will be held 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Aug.25. The limit for classes is 10 students, and parents have until August 23 to register their children. American Cancer Society seeks volunteers The American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery program is need of Prince George's County residents to volunteer as drivers. Volunteers would drive cancer patients to and from treatment appointments. The organization will provide training and can provide a flexible schedule.
