Advisory board seats new membersMontgomery County's Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board recently elected Sheldon Fishman as its chairman, replacing L. Blaine Charak. Fishman, who lives in the Silver Spring neighborhood of Forest Estates, previously served as vice chairman and led the board's transportation committee. A Silver Spring resident since 1974, he has been active in educational and civic affairs, having served as coordinator for the Albert Einstein High School Cluster and vice president of administration for the Montgomery County Council of Parent-Teacher Associations. He also served as president of the Forest Estates Community Association. "I want to sustain and build on the record that MCCAB has had and my goal is to improve the communication so we can offer better advice to the county executive," Fishman said, listing the following as top priorities: tap into the diversity of the midcounty, relay ideas on how to improve Georgia Avenue and mitigate the impact of construction of the Intercounty Connector, were among his top priorities. "It's an opportunity to be an additional ear for the county." Matt Zaborsky of Olney was elected vice chairman of the board. Zaborsky is executive vice president of the Greater Olney Civic Association, vice president of the Norbeck Meadows Civic Association and represents the association on the Montgomery County Civic Federation. He was a co-founder of the Olney Farmers and Artists Market and currently serves as its treasurer. The advisory board represents residents and businesses in the areas of Upper Rock Creek, Wheaton, Kensington, Kemp Mill, Aspen Hill, Glenmont, Norbeck, Forest Glen, Olney, Brookeville and Sandy Spring. Redevelopment committee seeks members Montgomery County is seeking applicants to fill four vacancies on the Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee. County seeks volunteers to help sexual assault victims Volunteers are needed to assist sexual assault victims and their families through the Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services. Volunteers provide crisis counseling and companion services at Montgomery County hospitals and police stations for victims of rape and sexual assault. Bilingual volunteers are encouraged to apply. All potential volunteers must attend a September training program. They must commit to serve for one year, in an on-call capacity, for one 12-hour shift or two six-hour shifts per week. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, have a valid driver's license and immediate access to transportation.
