Verizon officials, commenting on the possibility of an employee strike if no contract resolution is reached before the existing contract expires at midnight Saturday, said Friday the company will continue to bargain with union representatives to achieve "fair contracts."

"During a bargaining year, it's common for union members to authorize a strike," spokeswoman Sandra Arnette, based in Verizon's Baltimore office, said in an e-mail. "Of course, Verizon will continue to negotiate in good faith to achieve timely and fair contracts for Verizon Telecom union-represented employees. Our expectation is to negotiate new contracts that will continue to provide leading wage and benefit packages."

About 91 percent of Maryland Verizon employees who are members of the Communications Workers of America have voted to authorize a strike, said Candice Johnson, a union spokeswoman, this week. The union represents about 50,000 workers of the telecommunications company nationwide.

Members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have also authorized a strike if talks fail to yield an agreement. But neither union has set a strike date. The contract covers Verizon employees from Virginia to Maine.

Verizon is one of the top private employers in Maryland with about 10,000 employees. It has called for increases in health insurance payments by employees and reductions in coverage for retirees, according to union reports.

The Bennigan’s restaurant chain has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is closing its eateries, but independently owned franchises remain open.

The Plano, Texas, chain’s Web site lists four restaurants in Maryland, including one in Greenbelt; calls there were not answered this week. A store in Waldorf had ‘‘closed” signs on its doors, and callers to the Rockville restaurant heard that the number was ‘‘disconnected.”

A Bennigan spokeswoman said the bankruptcy filing, under which the chain will liquidate its holdings, also affects its Steak & Ale and Tavern restaurants, which are closing.

GMAC Mortgage closesfour offices in state

GMAC Mortgage is closing four offices in Maryland as part of a restructuring due to the slowdown in the housing market, a company spokesman said.

The closing of the offices in Frederick, Germantown, Waldorf and Prince George’s County resulted in nine loan officers being laid off, said Brett Weinberg, manager of public relations for GMAC ResCAP, parent of GMAC Mortgage.

The company will still have one Maryland office, in Lutherville, he said.

‘‘They were closed as a result of ongoing challenges in the marketplace,” Weinberg said. ‘‘For customers it will be completely seamless.” Mortgages ‘‘in the pipeline” will continue to be processed.
