Chance lost to do good with Chestnut Lodge propertyIn response to ‘‘Peerless to return dignity to Frieda’s Cottage” (July 25 article), I can only be reminded of the disgrace that should be associated with the closing of Chestnut Lodge in the first place. The hospital, which operated for almost 100 years, was Montgomery County’s finest resource for the treatment of serious mental illness and had national renown for doing so. That our County Council had the opportunity to save it in 2001 and did not do so reflects shame and misplaced priorities on us all. Has no one noticed our emergency rooms crowded with patients whose average length of stay in our local hospitals is 4.6 days, whose destiny is too often to be released to the streets or overburdened shelters? This, while the lodge property has been vacant for the past six years, unable to offer the wide array of services it once did to so many in need! You can restore the peeling paint on Dr. Frieda Fromm-Reichmann’s cottage, but what about the lost opportunity for recovery to hundreds whose lives could have been improved by a viable Chestnut Lodge? Do we really need more condos and McMansions in Rockville? I think not. Susan Kneller, Rockville
