What are the biggest challenges facing the probate court system and how would you address them?
The biggest challenges facing our county probate court system today are:
1. The increasing population in Prince George’s County, which has resulted in an increasing case load both in estates and trusts and in the number of guardianship petitions for children.
2. The continuing need for public education regarding wills, estates and trusts, and the preservation of legacies for future generations
In order to serve the increasing numbers of citizens, the Orphans’ Court in Prince George’s County is in the process of implementing mediation services in estate cases involving division of tangible property. We believe that this form of alternate dispute resolution will provide families with the ability to take part in the resolution process regarding their loved one’s estates, and will result in the efficient administration of justice.
The importance of education about estate planning, writing a will, and the probate process are crucial due to the increasing number of families and the accumulation of wealth by our citizens in this county. Our citizens need continuing education so that they can leave a legacy for future generations.
