Why are you running for office, and what would you like to see changed?
I am a retired Montgomery County Police Officer and the last 3 years of my police career; I was assigned as District Court police liaison. I was aware of the Sheriff’s tasks in the court and felt I should run for the elective office of Sheriff; since I feel we can make a difference. I want to increase morale in the Sheriff Dept. I want to recruit and retain the trained sworn deputies; as there are always other departments looking for good applicants. It’s a feeling I have to try to motivate and retain happy deputies. With a nucleus of good trained staff; your job is easier to maintain the jobs of controlling domestic violence, serving court emergency petitions, criminal warrants and court summons processes. I want to engage the county council in our budget process, so we can get quality law enforcement equipment and more marked and unmarked sheriff vehicles to initiate our deputy take home car and community policing type program. I want to explore ways where the sheriff office has first choice in serving court summons with a fee charged. Also look into a fee charged for the many commercial and residential warnings and evictions so we can better stabilize rents for the business and residential owners of property in the county. With revenue brought in, we have a better chance of increasing the sheriff’s budget. Lets also look at our man and woman working deputies and where they live with their families, as some police departments utilize mileage limit outside the county for our deputy fleet. Also look at out of county service of court summons, so we can get witnesses summoned and proceed quicker with our trial process. Just a thought that if we have a deputy living out of county then he⁄she can serve the court paper and⁄or warrant in that area. Each warrant and or summons served cuts down on cost and increases efficiency.
