The first week of August will be ushered in with the 44th annual Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department Carnival.
Starting Monday and running until Aug.8, the carnival — one of the oldest in the county — will feature rides, games, food and live entertainment.
"It's a small carnival that is very community-oriented and family-oriented," said Darrell Johnson, chief of the Libertytown Volunteer Fire Department. "It's a community event. We try to avoid merchandising. It's more of a family atmosphere."
People can enjoy the rides from 6:30 to 10 p.m. every day for $13. According to Larry Welsh, carnival co-coordinator, rides will be provided by Pennwood Amusement.
Welsh is a charter member of the fire department. He said that it's "our food and our entertainment; the name groups, name bands, the buffet and crab cakes," that keep people coming back to the carnival each year.
Live music will be featured every night. Bill Haley's Comets will play on Monday, Jay Henley & Stone Broke will play on Tuesday, the Hubcaps will play on Wednesday, Hectic Red will play on Thursday, Southern Breeze will play on Friday and Allen Brown & Friends will play on Saturday. Shows are at 7 and 9 p.m. nightly.
Food, one of the main staples of any carnival and a prominent feature of Libertytown's, will be available each night. Everything is homemade, from the hand-pressed crab cakes, pit beef and hand-dipped ice cream to the foods on the different buffet menu each night.
"Great food," Johnson said, "that's a Libertytown carnival tradition."
