Army Sgt. Ian Maharaj, son of Geeta and Alvarez Powell of Hyattsville, was a member of the team that performed color guard duties at Camp Victory in Iraq. The duties were performed during a transfer-of-authority ceremony. Maharaj is a mechanic who normally is assigned to Fort Hood in Texas. He has served in the military for seven years.
Local students make
dean's list
Several local students were named to the spring 2009 dean's list of Frostburg University. The students include Theodros McCreanor and Ashley Phillips of Hyattsville and Chidinma Dureke of Riverdale. Colmar Manor native Evangeline Cade was on the list with distinction for receiving a 4.0 grade point average. To be eligible for the list, a student must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a grade point average of at least 3.4.

National Night Out event
The Mall at Prince George's will host a daytime National Night Out event Aug. 4. Every year towns across the country hold National Night Out events focused on community involvement in crime prevention. On Aug. 4, the mall will hold activities from noon to 6 p.m. inside the mall's center court and in the parking lot in front of the former Office Depot, at 3500 East-West Highway in Hyattsville. The event will feature basketball, bingo, a moon bounce, face-painting, crime prevention displays and giveaways. Members from local police departments and law enforcement agencies will be on hand to talk to residents about crime and answer their questions. Attendees can enter to win gift cards.

to music college's dean's list
Kenneth Grimm of Hyattsville was named to the dean's list of Merklee College of Music, in Boston. To be eligible for the dean's list, fulltime students must achieve a grade point average of at least 3.4 and part-time students must reach a GPA of at least 3.6.
Brentwood resident's son deployed to Afghanistan
Christopher D. Carter, the son of Brentwood resident Lisa Ogundipe, joined 7,500 other sailors in going to Afghanistan in support of the war in that country. He will be serving from the USS Ronald Reagan. Carter joined the Navy in 2002.
Hyattsville student attends science camp at BSU
Approximately 50 Prince George's County students were selected to attend the Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp held at Bowie State University July 5 through July 17, including Jennifer Boateng of Hyattsville Middle School. At the two week, no-cost residential camp students studied science, technology engineering and mathematics and engaged in classroom study, experiments, team projects and field trips. The camp is named for Bernard Harris, the first African American to walk in space.

for women workshop
Arrow Bicycle in Hyattsville will host a workshop entitled "Healthy Eating for Active Women" tonight from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Holistic health counselor and food educator Kim Rush Lynch will show participants how to improve energy and endurance by incorporating the right nutrient-rich foods into diets. The Prince George's County Health Department will hold health town hall discussions throughout August. All meetings will be held at 6 p.m.
