John Townshend of University Park has been named dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Townshend, who was chair of the college's geography department, took his post July 27.
Townshend has worked for the university since 1989. He holds bachelor's and doctoral degrees from University College London, based in London, England.
Adelphi residents make Frostburg State dean's list
Ashley Cooke and Joshua Galvez of Adelphi were named to the spring semester dean's list at Frostburg State University in Frostburg.
The dean's list honors all students who took 12 or more credits during the spring and earned a grade point average of 3.4 or greater.
Eight UM students chosen
as Pat Tillman scholars
Eight students at the University of Maryland, College Park, have been chosen as recipients of the inaugural Tillman Military Scholarship program.
Undergraduate students David Boucher, Richard Garcia, Dan Hardisty, Anton Hoffman, Lavisha McClarin and Dennis Robinson and graduate students Kirby Bowling and James Dillard were selected to received the awards, sponsored by the Pat Tillman Foundation.
The foundation is named after and started by the family of former professional football player Pat Tillman who left football to become a U.S. Army Ranger and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004.
The scholarships help to cover tuition, books, room and board and even child care for veteran or active service military members and their dependents.
Seven of the eight recipients are current or former members of the military and McClarin is the daughter of a U.S. Army sergeant currently serving in Iraq.
Maryland is one of four universities in the nation – including Tillman's alma mater, Arizona State University in Tempe, Ariz. – to partner with the foundation.
Beltsville resident receives master's from arts college
Gregory Eckler of Beltsville graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga.
Eckler received a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design at the college's May 30 commencement.
Beltsville Elementary student attends science camp
Chanel Person, a student at Beltsville Elementary School, was one of about 50 county students who attended this year's Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at Bowie State University.
The free two-week camp was held from July 5 to July 17. Students studied science, technology, engineering and mathematics and took part in classroom experiments, group projects and field trips.
The camp is named after Bernard Harris, an astronaut who in 1995 became the first African American to perform an extra-vehicular activity, or spacewalk.

College Park Woods plans National Night Out activities
College Park Woods, a community in North College Park, will host a community gathering and dessert swap on Tuesday.
The event, held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the community's Neighborhood Park, is being held in accordance with National Night Out, an annual nationwide event where communities hold outdoor gatherings to promote community spirit and take a stance against crime.
College Park Woods residents are invited to the park and are asked to bring a dessert and possibly a recipe to exchange with neighbors.
Neighborhood residents will also turn on their porch lights from dusk to midnight that evening.
