The Dixieland Jazz Band will entertain audiences at The Historical Society of Frederick County’s Swinging Forties Jazz in the Garden event on Saturday.
The Historical Society of Frederick County will turn back the clock to the 1940s for this year’s Swinging Forties Jazz in the Garden event to be held from 7-9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Society’s Heritage Garden, 24 E. Church Street, Frederick.

The Dixieland Jazz Band will be belting out tunes from the era, while delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts will be served, along with complimentary soft drinks and a cash bar.

Although not required, attendees are encouraged to get into the spirit of the decade by wearing a period costume. Prizes will be awarded to those wearing the best male and female period costume.

Tickets are $25 per person in advance and $30 at the door.

Taney House to chill out

Also on Saturday, patrons can beat the summer heat, nineteenth century style, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Roger Brooke Taney House, 121 South Bentz St., Frederick.

Guests will discover how families of the era stayed cool without help of air conditioning, electric fans and swimming pools.

View a selection of antique folding hand fans from the Historical Society’s collection and learn how summer clothing, that did not include shorts, t-shirts, halter tops and flip flops, helped to mitigate sweltering days.

Find out how nineteenth century families prepared the home for summer to encourage cool breezes and discourage the heat.

Guests will be able to take part in old fashion ice cream making, a rare and special treat of the early days, and learn about other warm weather foods from the past.

Activities are included with regular adult admission of $3, free for children. The Roger Brooke Taney House is a property of the Historical Society of Frederick County
