Assault takes fourth at AAU Nationals

The D.C. Assault-Cowan U-10 boys’ basketball team took fourth place out of 60 teams in the AAU National Tournament July 8-15 in New Orleans.

The team swept through pool play by defeating Hornets Elite, 42-23, the Oakland Rebels, 42-17, and the Carolina Raptors, 43-21. Assault-Cowan advanced through bracket play by knocking off D1-Greyhounds, 45-31 and then defeating ARC, 50-40, in the quarter-final game before falling to the Memphis War Eagles, 59-36. Memphis went on to win the national title.

The Assault finished fourth after a 46-42 loss to Worldwide from Atlanta in the third-fourth-place game. This year marks the team’s third consecutive trip to the final four at the National tournament. The Assault took second place in the U-8 and U-9 Nationals the past two years.

During its down time in New Orleans, the team took food to the homeless and victims of Hurricane Katrina. The team includes Anthony Cowan Jr., Jamar Watson, Reginald Gardner Jr., Jaylon Myles, Jayson Johnson, Mike White Jr., Mickey Bell, Antoine Banks Jr., and Davon Munson. The team is coached Anthony Cowan, Jerry Watson, Reginald Gardner and Mike White.

Fall sportsregistrations under way

The Maryland City Mustang soccer program will hold registration from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Aug. 5 in front of Brock Bridge Elementary School. The Savage Boys and Girls Club is holding online registration for its fall flag football season at www.savagegbc.org. Boys and girls ages 6 to 14 are eligible. There will be three age divisions. The J. Green Wolverines, a new Laurel-based football and cheerleading organization that will play in the Prince George’s County Boys and Girls Club League, is seeking players and cheerleaders ages 7 to 14. The club also seeks volunteer football and cheerleading coaches. Registration will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sundays at World’s Gym, Route 197 and Muirkirk Road in Laurel. Soccer tryouts on tap

The Laurel Boys and Girls Club will hold tryouts for its U-14 boys’ travel soccer team from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McCullough Field, 8th and Montgomery Streets in Laurel. Players must be Prince George’s County and Laurel residents born during 1994 or 1995 and should wear cleats, shin guards, shorts and a white T-shirt.
