Laurel students make Virginia Tech dean’s listSix Laurel residents were among 18 local Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University students named to the dean’s list for the spring 2008 semester. Charlotte Campbell is a psychology major in the school’s College of Science. Lillian Ng, a 2008 graduate, earned her undergraduate degree in electrical engineering in the College of Engineering. Michael Krason just completed his junior year and is majoring in computer engineering in the College of Engineering. Leslie Walker just completed her freshman year as an architecture major in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. Benjamin Petit, a rising senior in the College of Engineering, is an electrical engineering major. Jennifer Porter just completed her freshman year in the College of Science, where she is majoring in biological sciences. To qualify for the list, students must take at least 12 credits per semester and earn a grade point average of 3.4 or above during the semester. Laurel resident awarded college scholarship Laurel resident and incoming Fairleigh Dickinson University student Timothy Goodell has been awarded the Col. Fairleigh S. Dickinson Scholarship. He will begin his freshman year at the Madison, N.J., school in September. Goodell is a June 2008 graduate of Annapolis Area Christian High School in Annapolis and plans to major in Film and Animation at the university. The scholarship is awarded annually to incoming freshmen with outstanding high school academic records and SAT scores, multiple extracurricular activities and exemplary campus interviews with university staff. Golden Shovel awardwinner announced Laurel resident KimberlyBristol was June’s recipient of the city of Laurel’s ‘‘Golden Shovel” award. Bristol enhanced her well-kept Laurel Avenue garden this year with vines that will produce both red and white grapes. Laurel residents make deans’ lists Laurel resident Derrek Arce made the NorthWest Arkansas Community College dean’s list during his spring 2008 semester. To become listed at the school, students must complete nine or more semester hours per term and maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher. Clement Ng of Laurel has made the dean’s list at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. To make the list students at the school must be taking at least 12 credit hours per semester and must maintain a grade point average of 3.3 or above. Laurel residents Amy Austin and Josh Austin were among the more than 100 Covenant College students to make the dean’s list this past spring. Both made the list at the four-year Christian college in Lookout Mountain, Ga., that emphasizes the liberal arts. Students on the list at Covenant College have maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.3 and are taking 12 or more credits per semester. Customer servicehours expanded Those calling the Corridor Transportation Corporation’s Customer Service line Saturdays will now be able to speak to a representative. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. the CTC’s customer service line will have live service. The CTC manages Connect-A-Ride transportation service in the city of Laurel, Maryland City, College Park, Odenton and Fort Meade. Prior to the change, callers could speak to customer service representatives Monday through Friday only. Routes, schedules and fare information are available online atwww.corridortransit.com. Laurel resident winsscholarship to Duke Laurel resident Modupe Adepoju is one of 28 high school students nationwide to receive a four-year university or college scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The scholarships are for up to $30,000 per year and go to high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds. More students received the scholarships in 2008 than in any year previously, with more than one-third of the recipients headed to Ivy League universities in the fall.
