Hyattsville students make UMD dean’s listThe University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, has named a number of Prince George’s students to its dean’s list, including two from Hyattsville. Tsega Gsilassie is a sophomore studying to be a physician assistant. Gsilassie earned a 3.8 grade point average. Fekadu Alemu Jiru is a freshman studying chemistry, and earned a 3.7 grade point average during last school year. DeMatha studentawarded scholarship The Ronald McDonald House Charities has awarded 26 high school seniors in the Washington metropolitan area scholarships, including Hyattsville resident Evan Kee. Kee attends DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville. In all, $52,000 was given in scholarships to the 26 students. Other Prince George’s County students awarded scholarships are Ashley Simmons of Upper Marlboro, who attends Riverdale Baptist High School; and Quentin Ford of Bowie, who attends Bowie High School. Ronald McDonald House Charities have a number of programs aimed at improving the health and well being of children. Bladensburg Community Center instructor recognized Clifford Thomas, a World of Fame martial arts instructor, was recognized for his years of service, volunteer work and contributions to the health of the community. On July 19 at the Bladensburg Community Center, Sen. David Harrington (D-Dist. 47) of Cheverly presented a state congratulatory citation to Thomas. Grinnell Collegeannounces dean’s list Thelma Cartagena was named to the spring 2008 semester Dean’s List at Grinnell College. The school, located in Grinnell, Iowa, named 265 students who had at least a 3.75 grade point average to its dean’s list. Cartagena is a Spanish major, and the daughter of Cesar Cartagena and Telma Cartagena. Free art camps for middle and high school students A nonprofit group is offering free art camps based at Hyattsville Middle School this summer. Hyattsville-based Minority Access, with support from the National Harbor Community Outreach Fund through the Prince George’s Community Foundation, is offering camps in two sessions. During the camps, students under 18 years old will be encouraged to plan a healthy lifestyle through art. Prince George’s County Public School teachers will instruct the classes, to be held at Hyattsville Middle School, located at 6001 42nd Ave. Session one started July 21 and will end Aug. 1, and is held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Session two begins Sept. 13, and ends Nov. 1, and will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday. Applications are available at Hyattsville Middle School. Councilman establishes management for dog park County Councilman Will Campos (D-Dist. 2) of Hyattsville is establishing a management team for the formation of a local dog park. Seton High Schoolhonors graduating seniors Elizabeth Seton High School held an awards ceremony in May for graduating seniors of the 2008 class who were recognized for outstanding achievements in varying academic and service endeavors. Students who were awarded for having the highest achievement in academic subjects were: Juliana Allen in art; Kirsten Green in computer information technology; Samantha Spellicy in English; Uchechukwu Ezeonyebuchi in French; Kalila Walters in Spanish; Eileen Lorenz and Jasmine Noronha in mathematics; Jasmine Noronha in instrumental music; Amelia Elson in choral music; Kayla Hawkins in physical education; Eileen Lornez and Jasmine Noronha in science; and Krystal Okafor in social studies. Restaurants openin University Town Center Three restaurants have opened in Hyattsville’s University Town Center in past weeks. The Wild Onion is a café serving organic foods. Largo-based Carolina Kitchen, which features southern cooking and live music on Thursday through Saturday evenings, is now open next to the Regal Royal cinemas. The town center’s newest addition, Gifford’s Ice Cream and Candy, opened this week. County resident tapped for Human Relations Commission Merrill Smith of Mitchellville is one of three chosen nominees by County Executive Jack Johnson for the Human Relations Commission, whose goal is to abolish discrimination in the U.S. through advocacy, education, mediation, investigation of complaints and enforcement of discrimination laws. Smith is a regional manager for Ritz Camera. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Ohio State.
