Mavericks capture tournament crownThe Maryland Mavericks U-11 boys’ basketball team won the Varsity Division at the American Youth Basketball Tour National Championship last weekend at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa. The Mavericks beat the New York Raiders, Cats Basketball and C.C. Heat on Saturday to reach the title game, where they beat the Lancaster Crusaders, 60-32. The performance on Saturday came after the Mavericks had gone 0-4 in the earlier stage of the tournament and ended up with the bottom seed for bracket play. The team includes Dante Proctor, Kareem Williams, Robert Gray, B.K. Ndeh, Jared Carithers, Cameron Moore, Isaac Fulwood, Collins Morfaw, Jonathan Allen, Curtis Lee, Avyasa Smith, Curtis Lee, Damico Blakeney, Duwan Webbe, Eugene Wood, Jaimon Turner, Kelvin Caution, Obinna Onuoha, Peyton Gray, Rene Haley, Wesley Woods, Jarell Rauch and Devon Heyliger under coach Manning Durant. The trophy will be on display at the Bowie City Gym. Frontrunners sendfour to nationals Four members of the first-year Frontrunners Track Club of Bowie qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics starting Saturday in Detroit by notching top-four finishes at the Region 2B Championships. Upper Marlboro resident Todd Sampson gave Frontrunners two first-place finishes in the Boys Sub-Youth division and will return to the Junior Olympics after winning the triple jump (33 feet, 2 inches) and the 100-meter hurdles with a personal record of 15.08 seconds. He also took second in the 200 hurdles (28.52). Joshua Wilkins of Bowie was the runner-up in the Sub-Youth 3,000 (11:06.89), earning his third trip to the Junior Olympics. He also ran a personal-best time of 4:49.72 in the 1,500 to take second place. Capitol Heights resident Jaleah Nelson, in her first year as a track athlete, took fourth place and set a personal-best in the Bantam Girls 1,500 race walk (12:22.5). Charles County resident Anthony Holton, a first-year triple jumper, qualified for the national meet in the Youth Boys triple jump with a fourth-place finish (33 feet, 6 inches). Just missing trips to the nationals were Bowie resident Trinity Wilkins, Clinton resident Marcus Kane and Fort Washington resident Ian Florence, who all had fifth-place finishes. Wilkins set a personal best in the 800 (3:18.72). Kane went 14.60 in the 80 hurdles. Florence finished the 800 in 5:30. Nhaikyia Smith, Dallas Blakney, JayLah Nelson, Illya Edwards, Leonard Bell, Marceles Kane also competed in the regional meet. Full Speed tunes upfor national meet The Full Speed Athletics track club had several strong performances last weekend at the Cliff Wiley Track Classic in Columbia, as the team tuned up for this week’s trip to the USATF Junior Olympics in Omaha, Neb. Jaylen Johnson and Sterling Parks won medals in the 100- and 200-meter events, respectively. Cydnee Scott, Jahre Fish and Joe Perry won medals in the high jump. Jahre Fish and Jerlan Fish each won medals in the turbo javelin. Jyra Perry was a medalist in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters. Jamia Perry and Jada Perry each won medals in the shot put. The 400 relay team of Parks, Johnson, Ricky Harps and David Williams took first place. Diamond City takesfifth at regionals The Diamond City All-StarsU-16 boys’ basketball team placed fifth at the 60-team YBOA National Championships in Polk City, Fla. Diamond City team captain Dominic Williams was runner-up in a slam dunk contest and teammate Calvin Banks was named to the all-tournament team. Other team members with strong play during the tournament included Banks, Chauncey Caudle, Antonio Cole, Ed Dyson, David Hucks, Bernard Smith, Darryl Thompson, Marcus Thompson, Williams and Emmanuel Wood under the guidance of 15-year coach Felix Wood. Bowie clubs seekingsoftball, football players The Bowie Boys and Girls Club is looking for players ages 8 to 17 for its fall softball league.
