The Bowie Community Outreach Committee has chosen to award its annual grants totaling $12,500 to three community groups. The committee awarded $4,836 to the Bowie Therapeutic Nursery Center. The center is a therapeutic nursery that serves preschool children with mental health needs. The funding will go toward a new parent education project to provide parent training and to reach out to the community to invite residents to sessions on proper parenting techniques.

Collington Masonic Lodge 230 will receive $3,875 for its Child Identification Program. Through the CHIP program, the Masons collect biological information, videos and pictures of children for their parents on a CD. The information can be quickly distributed to police in the case the child is missing. The funding will pay for additional equipment and identification packages.

The final grant will go to the Unicorn Center Inc. Therapeutic Horseback Riding program. The $3,789 awarded will go toward providing riding lessons for disabled Bowie participants.

A total of 18 applications for grant funding were received by the committee.

BGE moving forwardwith meter replacement

Baltimore Gas and Electric will continue replacing Westinghouse model D3 meters in the Bowie area. The remaining 731 meters, some of which had been giving faulty low readings, in the Bowie area will be replaced as part of the overall program, which will target approximately 200 meters per month across the territory. It will take until 2011 to replace all 7,185 meters. This means meter replacements in Bowie will be gradual and not targeted for replacement all at once.

BGE plans to send out postcards to customers whose meter is slated for replacement within 30 days of the expected work date. Each meter will be tested individually following removal to determine whether it is correctly recording energy consumption. A letter will be sent to each customer informing them of the results of the test. If the meter is not recording properly, the customer will also be informed their consumption readings may increase as a result of the installation of the accurate meter.
