Kensington marksman targeted a gold medalBlake Reburn, of Kensington, took home a gold medal and awards from the USA Shooting National Championship in Fort Benning, Ga., July 2. Reburn, 17, is a rising senior at St. John’s College High School and has been shooting competitively for three years. Blake took first place in the 17-and-under age division bringing home the gold medal. He also won fifth place in the 20-and-under age group. The young marksman also placed 26th among all shooters. At an award ceremony, he was awarded the gold medal by the coach of the U.S. Olympic Pistol Team. Blake rebounded from a disappointing performance for the April Junior Olympics tryouts. ‘‘If he had shot the same scores he shot at [National Championships], he would’ve made the Junior Olympics,” said his father Gary Reburn. ‘‘Anyone can be beaten on any given day. He’s got a lot of competitions left. ...He has a real good shot this year of being in the top three overall.” Blake still has his sights trained on placing high in tournaments this year. USA Shooting, the national governing body for Olympic shooting sports, traditionally trains the winners of the national Junior Olympics and the first- and second-place overall shooters from the National Championship for the USA Olympic shooting team. ‘‘That’s going to be his goal in these next three years,” Gary Reburn said. His next major events are in December, when he plans to compete in the State Junior Olympics.
