A search of a closed sanitarium in Laurel yielded no human remains after a report of "grave-like mounds," was received from a local TV station, the Washington, D.C., Office of Property Management reported.
OPM and District police officials arrived at the closed Forest Haven facility for the mentally retarded Tuesday night and searched several "grave-like mounds" found there, according to an OPM statement released Wednesday.
No information was provided as to the actual contents of the mounds.
The search was prompted by a tip from WJLA (Channel 7), a Washington, D.C., television station, OPM officials said. The station's Web site said it received a photo of the mounds from an unnamed source Monday and alerted OPM and District police officials the next day.
The Forest Haven facility opened in 1925. After years of complaints about poor conditions and patient abuse, it closed in 1991, and its more than 1,000 residents were dispersed into group homes throughout the District.
Though located in Laurel, the District-owned property remains under OPM jurisdiction.
OPM Director Robin Jasper was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
