Eight Bombers get all-star call

Eight members of the College Park Bombers were selected to the East Roster for the Cal Ripken Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star game. The contest will be played at 7:05 p.m. Monday at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen and will be televised live on the MASN cable channel.

The Bombers’ all-stars include infielders Mike Celenza and Corey Todhunter, outfielders Jeremy Jakubowski and K.C. Warden and pitchers Jack Amidei, Jim Britton, Mike Castrignano and Mike Bell.

Celenza, a sophomore third baseman from Salisbury University, was the league’s leading hitter entering the week with a .365 average. Todhunter is a senior first baseman from Mesa State, who is the team’s top defensive player with a .994 fielding percentage and just one error in 177 chances. He also has a team-high three home runs.

Jakubowski (St. Joseph’s) is hitting .292 and is the league leader in stolen bases with 15 in 26 games. Warden (Ohio Dominican) is second in the league in batting average (.322) and has a team-high 14 runs batted in.

Bell, a junior from St. John’s River CC, has the league’s second-best opponent’s batting average, holding opposing hitters to a .177 clip. Amidei, a junior from Mesa State, is fourth in the league in strikeouts with 36 and is 2-1 with a 2.72 earned run average. Britton, a junior from St. Bonaventure, is also 2-1 and has a 2.45 ERA. Castrignano is a junior from Delaware Tech and has a 3-1 mark this summer with a 2.45 ERA.

Bowie native Joe Palumbo, a third baseman from the University of Maryland who plays for the Herndon (Va.) Braves, was named to the West roster for the all-star game. Palumbo is hitting .215 with nine RBI and nine stolen bases in 12 attempts for Herndon.

The Bombers were in sixth place in the seven-team league with a 12-19 mark heading into Wednesday night’s game against the second-place Bethesda Big Train. The contest ended after The Gazette went to press.

College Park has road games against Herndon, Youse’s Maryland Orioles and the Maryland Redbirds today through Saturday before returning to Shipley Field for a 6 p.m. game on Sunday against the Orioles, who lead the league with a 21-11 mark.
