A presentation about the 2008 Maryland Senior Olympics will be held 11 a.m. July 24 at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Ave.

Now in its 29th year, the Maryland Senior Olympics features statewide competitions in a wide range of activities, from billiards and basketball to shuffleboard and swimming for all Maryland residents age 50 or older. This year’s competition runs Sept. 1 to Nov. 7 at community centers throughout the state, including several sites in Montgomery County.

‘‘The motto of the MSO is to participate is to win,” said Edward P. Wroth, the event’s executive director, who will lead the presentation in Takoma Park. ‘‘Our goal is to get every active adult, 50 years or older, thinking about doing something physically active and thinking about doing something that in turns gives them physical activity out of the house.”

Wroth will provide information and answer questions at the July 24 presentation. Among the 19 activities and 16 sports in the event are archery, badminton, bowling, cycling, football, Frisbee and softball throw, golf, horseshoes, lawn bowling, line dancing, racquetball, 5K and 10K road races, softball, table tennis, and track and field.

‘‘It’s really more of a fun competition,” Wroth said.
